Ah yes, it’s been such a glorious month with the return of football! I’ve asked my good friend (and LadyBallers guest blogger), Jim Harris, to join me in discussing the Gator football season so far. His responses are in blue.
As expected, the first couple weeks of Gator football has been a little rough but this past Saturday against Tennessee surprised me a little bit. Overall, we were looking much better - especially our defense. We still made quite a few mistakes, and should I even MENTION the number of penalties? (Probably not.) What do you think we need to work on the most before our next game?
Our execution and concentration have been terrible. I have not been a big fan of the play calling so far. When we pass, it seems like good things happen. Would like to see us use the pass to set up the run a little like Spurrier did. We can't get away with the slow starts as the season progresses. Our defense is going to have some breakdowns and we need to take early control. The first half has not been our friend.
What do you think of Brantley's performance so far? Has it met your expectations?
He has done well so far. The kid has a cannon, and his passes are usually spot on. He needs to work a little on his control, and he needs to look for his outlet receivers a little better when the deep routes are well covered. He is capable of putting up some big numbers.
Why do you think they have Pouncey playing a completely different position this season especially when he'll just be leaving next year.
I have no idea. He is our most experienced offensive lineman. But doesn’t seem like he is the best player for that starting center job. That’s a big responsibility to stick a player in that slot that has never played it before. He is getting better, but still makes some pretty huge mistakes.
After watching other games over the past few weeks, who do you think will be the Gators biggest competitor?
If we get our act together, I don’t see much in the SEC East that can stop us from getting back to the Championship game. South Carolina looks for real this year, so they may pose an excellent challenge. Georgia is down, LSU has some problems. Alabama obviously seem even better than last year, the game Oct 2nd is going to be very very tough. Good thing is, if we lose that one.. there is a good possibility to meet them again in Atlanta. Don’t think we will be much of a threat for the BCS title unfortunately, but you never know. Arkansas is pretty scary too.
This Saturday we have Kentucky. Do you have any concerns against Kentucky?
The way we have played, yes I have concerns. Kentucky has always played us pretty tough. We should beat them by 3 touchdowns if we play well. But lately that hasn’t been the case.
Lastly, prediction for Saturday vs. Kentucky?
I think we will win. But not sure we are capable yet of really dominating like we can.
Anything else you want to add?
Yes! One last thing… I’m very disappointed in the arrests that have plagued the team. I was happy that Meyer kicked Rainey off the squad. There is no room for that behavior. And even though we lead FSU in arrests since Meyer has taken the helm... they still lead us in NCAA violations in that same time frame!!!
