Every morning before work, I turn on Good Morning America. I like to catch up on what is going on around the world and see what the crazy Florida weather has in store for the day. On Monday, GMA covered a story about the University of Connecticut’s Women’s basketball team. Why, you ask? Well, their basketball team has achieved something pretty amazing – they have won 88 games in a ROW!
Check out these additional stats:
- The last time they lost a game was in April of 2008
- They have two National Titles
- They’ve beaten their opponents by an average of 30 points
I was smiling from ear to ear listening to this fantastic story and then when I heard the reporter say, “As stunning as it is, it isn’t getting the marquee coverage it might if they were men,” I honestly laughed a little and said to myself, “go figure.”
It’s amazing to me how extraordinary accomplishments get overlooked because of a person’s gender. Some people probably didn’t even get past the first half on this post simply because I mentioned women’s basketball. Personally, I think it’s ridiculous. An 88 game winning streak for ANY team is a huge accomplishment and any sports fan should be acknowledging these achievements.
Since then, the ladies went on to win their 89th game against Florida State Tuesday night which beat the winning streak the UCLA Men’s basketball team had from the 1980s! Freakin' awesome!
Well done, ladies!
