I told you a couple weeks ago about my first season as a high school basketball coach. We were coming up on the sectionals and I was pretty excited about the possibility of winning the school’s first sectional game. Unfortunately, that win did not come to fruition. Before the game, we told the boys that if they kept their opponent under 50 points, then we had a really good shot of winning the game. They went out and did just that, they held them to 49 points. We just decided to pick the wrong night to have our worst shooting game of the season and lost by 10 points. The kids weren’t devastated at the loss, because they knew they did everything they could have on the defensive end of the floor; they just didn’t make their shots. That was a very positive response that I really didn’t expect out of the team. That showed me a level of maturity and understanding that I hadn’t seen all season long. I think that is a very good sign for the future. I’m very excited for the summer workouts and next season!
I have several highs and lows of the season. There were so many times that I could say, “that was my favorite part of the season” and there were a few times that I could say, “that was the worst part of the season.” In the end, it all came together to make my first season on the high school level a wonderful experience.
I hate to see the seniors leave, but I know that is part of the deal. I’ll enjoy keeping in touch with these young men as they go off to college and develop even more into the successful young adults that I know they will become. One of the three seniors is going to be playing basketball for his school, but hasn’t decided which of the four schools he will be attending. Another has decided that he will try his hand at running cross country on the collegiate level. The third senior has decided that his basketball days are over, unless he decides to play intramurals in college. We have a fundraiser game this Wednesday. It features the school staff against the boy’s team. I’ve seen a few of the teachers shoot around and I think this might be the most lopsided victory in the fundraiser’s history!
I’ll continue to fill you in on summer workouts and shooting camps as they near.
