We are officially at the second half of the baseball season, and I can say with %100 certainty I am still digging it. I actually watched the All-Star game, Home Run Derby, and all the other stuff that goes with it. I pay attention to scores everyday and I've been to a few MLB games this year. I know, you're in shock. So am I. Don't get me wrong, Sid Bream still ruined my life but the scorn is starting to fade (at least for now).
Why am I into it? It's simple, I have something to talk about. For me baseball isn't a sport that I can sit there and just watch any old game. I'm not heart and soul passionate about it. What I am passionate about is my beloved "Little League" team, who I will from this point on refer to those "Battling Buccos" as the Pittsburgh Pirates. Not only are they four games above .500 (huge accomplishment where I come from), they are only a game out of first place. Against the Red Sox they are 2-1 and versus
the Phillies they are 2-1, that's pretty respectable considering those are the top teams in their leagues. For the first time since 1990 we had 3 guys sent to the All-Star game. Let's face it Andy McCutchen should have been there since the vote in, but being a Pirate carries a stigma and there's nothing you can do about that.
Here's what I'm asking from you. Unless you are FROM Philly, New York, or Boston jump off the "big market bandwagon" and jump onto my swashbuckling back. Well, at least pay attention to them, and a little cheer here or there wouldn't hurt. Also, if you are not a Pirate fan STOP wearing the hat because you like the colors. When I'm waiting next to you and say "how bout Cutch?" or "Go Buccos" I fully expect you to be able to carry on an intelligent conversation with me. If you can't, then crossbones and black and yellow clearly aren't your thing.
Oh, and for all you naysayers who say they will fall soon. Here's the thing, usually we self destruct by
now. Last year at this time were were 30-58, already 18.0 games back. In 2009 we were 38-50, 9.5 games back. In 2008, 44-49, 12.5 games back. I could go back a full 18 years and I'm pretty sure you would see a trend. For now, we are a team to be reckoned with, and with that being said I am officially back in the game of being a knowledgeable fan to be reckoned with.
So bring on the second half of the season and some trash talking, I am ready for it and so are my Buccos (fingers crossed).
