A few weeks ago, I had the opportunity to meet my all time favorite Phillie, Darren “Dutch” Daulton. Darren was making an appearance at Appetites on Main, in Exton, PA. I tried not to act like too much of a crazed fan but all my dreams of meeting him came true.
When Darren played for the Phillies he was a force to be reckoned with. All his teammates looked up to him and all the fans wanted to know him. He played hard and epitomized what a Phillie was supposed to be.
I fell in love with Darren Daulton after Terry Mulholland threw his no hitter in 1989. I was watching the post game coverage of this feat, when the most handsome man I had ever seen filled the screen. He had bright eyes, a strong jaw and, his muscles bulged. I was hooked. It was from this point on that I became an avid Phillies fan and gave my heart to Dutch.
I met Darren when I was in seventh grade at the ALS autograph session. It was an overwhelming moment for me and I barely spoke. I knew that this time was my opportunity to let him know that he had helped me become one of the biggest phillies fans in the area.
Dutch has now returned to Philly as a host of a radio show on the Phanatic (97.5) and a sports analyst on Comcast Sports net. I love that he is back.
On the night that I met him, he entered the bar and set up an autograph signing. He posed for numerous pictures and signed whatever anyone put in front of him. After the session, he stayed and talked with his fans. He shared memories of spending time with Phillies fans during his playing days, how he knew the phils were headed to another playoff stint this year and was just everything I hoped he would be. I have heard that sometimes its better not to meet those that you loved as a child, admired and almost worshipped. But while I stood and shared a Miller Lite while Darren Daulton drank next to me I knew I was a phan phorever.
