Males Quizzing Female Sports Fans...Why?

I don’t want this to have to be a negative post but I always wanted to get this off my chest and maybe get some better understanding. This seems like the best platform to do so. I don’t understand the way some male fans treat us female fans, but I am hoping the males who read this could offer some insight. Over the various years of being a female fan, I have had so many occurrences of terribly rude and obnoxious male fans trying to “challenge” or “quiz” me on my sports knowledge. I have NEVER heard two males have a discussion like this: “Hey man, nice Kobe jersey. Do you know where he went to High School?” And I bet some males are just shaking their head thinking the same thing. How would you feel if a dude came up to you and started asking you the most random, lame questions about the team you were cheering/repping for? So frustrating. Last week this happened to me 2 times within 10 minutes, I also got a random comment about just cheering in general. #1 – I was wearing a Jameer Nelson jersey and the boys behind me started asking me all these random questions about him. Little did they know, I actually am a fanatic about Jameer and as soon as I started answering them one after another, the one guy told me to sit down because I was not “good looking enough to even cheer.” If I ever heard that discussion between two males I would laugh my arse off. Who says that? #2 – I was getting a drink, minding my own business and the guy behind me asked his friend (male of course) “I wonder if she even knows who #14 is?” I turned around immediately and said, “Excuse me?” He said “Who’s number 14?” These are the type of people that I want to walk away from but then it would look like I just didn’t know the answers. Uggg, so frustrating!! So of course when I start asking him questions about Jameer – he backs off. So my question to men is, why are you so harsh on female sports fans? What do you get out of it? Why do you feel the need to challenge us? I would love to understand this because it just baffles me. Please, please enlighten me.

The men who are quizzing you are buffoons, quite simply speaking. Some of the most knowledgable sports fans I know are women and to stereotype someone's love of sport or knowledge of any game based on gender is to foolishly betray one's ignorance. Fortunately, at least in the first instance you seem to have put those churlish fellows in their place.

When I have coached my sons' youth sports teams I have always tried to have at least one female coach, and I have been derided for it, so I know the type of guy you are encountering.

Look on the bright side. At least when guys act like morons before you have met them, it helps to weed out the idiots with very little investment of time!

I've seen this instance way too many times. It's a stereotype. Men don't think women have enough knowledge about sports. And they're so territorial when it comes to that sort of thing. And then when the guys quizzing find out that the women have more knowledge than them, they're not going to admit to losing and just start looking for excuses ("she wasn't good-looking, anyway" or "whatever, she's a groupie") so that they don't look bad.

Its like pulling pig tails on the playground. In truth the guy was so blown away by how you look AND you are a sports fan, he had to go to the exact opposite of the spectrum. Its some crazy theory, if he acts like he isnt interested and questions your looks, you will be challanged and intrigued ultimately falling madly in love. Im surprised he didnt buy you a drink. Guys are complex creatures. I have failed at that very theory many times.

I know the sexism in sports is horrible. I would know since I deal with it in my immediate family. No one ever said that sports was a man's territory. It was just naturally assumed, and you know what they say about assumed. I consider myself a sports statistitian afficianado but if a girl knows more than me, great! She's passionate about the game and wants to dig deeper into it.

Well this are my two cents. I think guys that are like that are just pricks. I have to be honest, being a Magic fan I think there's nothing hotter or cutter than a girl in a jersey or magic shirt...but even more that, just the fact that you have something to share and enjoy together with someone from the opposite sex should be good enough. I'm a guy and I have no idea where all the players come from or what they did before. I just love the fact that they are there playing and helping us forget about the everyday life for a few hours and everyone, guy or girl, should be able to enjoy this. Guys that look down on girls that like sports should not even be acknowledge!!! lol

Hey CB! The first thing that comes to mind is a great quote I heard about the mouth/brain connection: "It's ok to have the thought, but that doesn't mean you should always speak the thought."

I would say first that all guys are not like that. At least you know that me and MANY of your friends are not like that!! You have run into some real idiots -- especially saying that YOU are not pretty enough.... WOW!

Anyway, most guys seems to have the incorrect notion that men have a monopoly on sports knowledge. Some of the BEST sports conversations I have had were with women! In this day and time, I have learned that "people" know more now than ever before about EVERYTHING. This is not only a result of the internet -- women are participating in sports between the lines and in the business end more than ever before!!

Besides, look at ESPN, Fox Sports and local sportscasters -- many more women are on the job than ever before. Note: Doris Burke is currently and quietly doing play-by-play for NBA games now!!! I was very impressed and proud of her...

In shorts, CB, you have to consider the source. It sounds like each of the guys that said that to you were ignorant, rude and not worthy to be in YOUR presence. Also, alcohol was likely involved, no? (But, not an excuse) I would just say be careful and don't generalize because MANY of us men respect great sports fans (who happen to be women) and remember that we 9YOUR MALE Twitter family members heart y'all and love the great passion you bring to fandom!!!

personally i have met colleen and if you read her tweets she knows exactly what she is talking about, i think men do stereotype women for instance wearing a jj redick jersey because they think hes cute and they dont know he shoots 90percent from the line or that he went to duke and yes there are some poeple that do that, however theres plenty of guys i see with yankees hats for example because they just won that i can say did u see that game last nite what a win and they are like ah ya man great win, problem the yankees were off last nite. There are plenty of male bandwagon jumpers id even say more than females. I have to add to this. Although I was not directly quizzed, I was quite upset about the following:

I was at a Tweet Up in Austin, met a REALLY awesome guy who was at the show, and when I expressed that I was SO EXCITED FOR THE GAME - he looked at me, and said "oh are we playing games at the Tweet Up?" I simply replied, "No! There's a basketball game on tonight I want to watch." He says (with his eyebrows all raise), "YOU watch basketball? Heh...yeah, WHO are you watching tonight?" He said it to me in a tone of voice like "you have no idea what basketball game is on tonight"... I seriously wanted to smack him honestly. Then I kindly informed him of what game I was watching, who I was excited to see, told him about LadyBallers, and he kindly shut up :)
