We're taking a break from the NBA madness for a moment today (at least until Game 2 tonight.)
Yesterday, June 1, was National Running Day. This event was organized for those who love to run to join each other all over the country and share their love of running. The event website states, "We may run alone, but on National Running Day, we celebrate together! On this day, runners everywhere share their passion for a lifestyle that is one of the best, and simplest, ways to stay fit—and so much more. You can head out solo to clear your mind, gab with your regular running buddies, or turn an unsuspecting friend into a running fiend. This day is for us!"
National Running Day encourages runners to participate in ways that benefit charities as well - from getting sneakers on little feet to making it possible for people with disabilities to race - by donating to Shoes that Fit and Crowdrise.
With their "10 Ways to Celebrate" list, it was easy for those who wanted to participate to find a way to do so, and to get others involved with them! These ideas are great for every day health and fitness, not just on this special occassion.
- Declare your passion.
- Bring a runway to work.
- Morph your friends into running feinds.
- Change happy hour to running hour.
- Strike new ground.
- Give the gift of happy feet.
- Make running run in the family.
- Choose a running resolution.
- Take advantage of the great outdoors.
- Treat yourself like a champion.
My personal favorites are numbers 9 and 10; for me they translate to so much more than running. They are two things we should all remember and appreciate, for our running and our mental and physical health.
National Running day also gave runners a chance to declare why they run. What do you run for? For your health? For your happiness? For stress release? Some on the site say, "because I can!", "for me", "for world domination" (I'm not so sure about that one...), "because I can eat anything I want" (THAT I am all for!!), "because it's peaceful and it's hard", and I know of one runner who runs for cupcakes!
So, why do you run?
