Spring training 2010 has officially begun…and it ended with a “W” for the Phillies. It was only fitting that the first battle of the Spring was against the team that broke the hearts of every Phillies fan and as Jayson Werth put it in an interview that aired today, “left a bitter taste in all our mouths.”
When the Phillies last saw the NY Yankees they were celebrating the fact that they dethroned the Phillies as world champs. They were jumping up and down and celebrating a victory that Philadelphia came so close to grasping.
While it was the first game and pre season statistics do not mean anything, the Phillies went out looking like they had something to prove and in a way they did. Roy Halliday was taking he mound and wanted to proveto Phillies fans that although we lost Cliff Lee we still have the strongest staff in the NL East and possibly baseball. Placido Palanco wanted to prove that the Phillies were correct in bringing him back to play the hot corner. Kyle Kendrick wanted to prove that he has a right to vie for the fifth starter position. And the Phillies wanted to prove to themselves and their fans that they could beat the NY Yankees.
Yes, I understand that the team’s A level players did not play the whole game, but I do need to say that while they did play- they played well. I am very excited for Roy “Doc” Halliday to be a Phillie. Pitching scoreless innings today is a sign of things to come.
So let the countdown get going until opening day….GO PHILLIES.
